Firies 3-11 Rathmore 2-12

Rathmore beat Firies last September in the Semi-Final replay by a two point margin, and in this match they hit the ground running and after 4 mins had a goal and a point to Firies single point.

Action from the Firies v's Rathmore gameAs last years Champions they looked in control and kept edging in front for the the first quarter, but two goals in quick succession, kept Firies in touch and as both teams exchanged points the first half ended on a score line of Firies 2-03 to Rathmore 1-07.

The second Half started the same as the first with a goal and a point from Rathmore in the first 2 mins, and again they looked in control, and things looked omnious for Firies.

While Firies notched up 3 Points, Rathmore went off the boil a bit, and it was 9 minutes until they scored again, but their fortunes looked like they were changing and they did add another fine point 2 mins later. Action from the Firies v's Rathmore game

Firies pointed from a free, and around the 18 minute were bearing down on goal but saw their effort go out for a 45. Instead of taking their point, they quickly hand passed it, and were looking for a goal, but eventually did come away with a point.

From the kick out Firies again manufactured a goal chance, but in the end the effort went well wide, they did point a free in the 21st minute. Rathmore took the opportunity to add two substitutes, fresh leags to try to stem the Firies comeback.

Action from the Firies v's Rathmore gameFiries were awarded a free in the 22nd minute, which they converted and came within a point of Rathmore. Two minutes later Firies were again bearing down on goal, and a shot with much pace ended hitting the crossbar and going over to level the match.

With 4 mins to go Rathmore uped their game but were unlucky with a missed point and also a shot straight accross goal, but they pointed a free to take the lead 2-12 to Firies 2-11 with 2 minutes to go to full time.

Action from the Firies v's Rathmore gameA side line ball was floated into the square and a last minute goal was secured by Firies, there was a nervous 3 mins of enjury time for Firies to defend their 2 point lead but in the end the final whistle came. Final Score Firies 3-11 Rathmore 2-12.

Rathmore will feel a little hard done by, having the victory stolen in the dying moments of the game but Firies will feel it was their time to get the rub of the green and that two point victory.

O'Sullivan Cup round up

Following last weekend’s games in the Junior Championship for the O’Sullivan Cup, Dr Crokes, Kilcummin and Firies all advance to the semi-finals while Scartaglen earned a quarter final spot against Spa. In Glenflesk, a goal by full forward Ruari Mangan in the 15th minute laid the foundation for Dr Crokes win over the home side. Brian Mc Mahon put Dr Crokes two points clear but as half time beckoned two well taken scores by Gary O’Donoghue and Gerry Kennedy levelled matters - Dr Crokes 1-3 Glenflesk 0-6. Dr Crokes went 1-6 to 0-6 ahead in the early minutes of the second half with scores from Conor O’Neill, Niall O’Connell and Ruari Mangan. But Glenflesk levelled through Daniel Crowley, Gerry Kennedy and a hotly disputed Evan Horan point – 0-9 to 1-6. Good goal keeping from Johnny O Donovan in the Glenflesk goal kept Dr Crokes at bay but after a series of ricochets, Niall O’Connell pointed for the town side to set up a strong finish for Dr Crokes who lead 1-9 to 0-9 with ten minutes left. Glenflesk’s final score was a pointed free from Gerry Kennedy while James Jones and Chris Egan finished off the Dr Crokes scoring at Dr Crokes 1-11 Glenflesk 0-10

Elsewhere, Kilcummin put up an impressive score against Legion winning by eleven points. They did most of the damage in the first half leading 3-7 to 0-8 at half time – their goals coming from Ritchie O’Connor, Sean B O’Doherty and Michael O’Sullivan. Half way through the second period, Legion was awarded a penalty which Derek Twomey converted. However, Kilcummin was always in control and at the end Diarmuid O’Donoghue added a fourth goal to put his side through to the semi final – Kilcummin 4-13 Legion 1-11

Firies and Cordal met in Farranfore where Stephen Hoctor goaled for the home side and Donal McCarthy and Pat O’Sullivan found the net for Cordal. But Firies had too much fire power for the visitors and proceed to the semi finals after an eight point win – 1-16 to 2-5.

Fossa visited Scartaglen in their postponed first round game hoping to improve on their Cahill Cup performance of the previous Friday when they lost by a point to Tarbert. However, the home side held out for the narrowest of wins in a close game. Scartaglen got off to a great start when Timmy O’Connor had the ball in the Fossa net in the second minute. Fossa clawed their way back to be level at half time – 1-5 to 0-8. On the resumption Fossa won a penalty in the opening minute which Chris Myers despatched to the net . Fossa kept their noses ahead until the fifteenth minute when Liam Horan was fouled in the square. He took on the responsibility of the penalty and levelled the scores with a good goal. That was the turning point for the home side and in the final quarter they shaded the scoring - three points to two – with Noel Rahilly registering the all important winner to put his side through to the quarter final against Spa on this Saturday evening . Scartaglen 2-8 Fossa 1-10.
